Improvised weapons for Indian Para commandos


New Delhi: India is on the verge to modernize the Special Para Forces with improvised weapons and military equipment for making them more deadly during a stealthy warfare with the conflicts along the border continuing since almost a year.

Last week, Seven Request for Proposals (RFPs) were issued to Swedish, American and Israeli arm manufacturing companies for acquisition of new weaponry which includes assault rifles, Sniper rifles, machine guns, light rocket launchers, shotguns, pistols and night vision devices, the Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.

The Special Forces of the country constitute 9 Para-military Forces and 5 Airborne Para battalions, consisting 620 soldiers each. The elite Forces already have special compact weapons like Israel’s TAR-21 Tavor assault rifles, 7.62mm Galil sniper Rifles and American M4A1 carbines.
