Huge turnout in Jammu and Kashmir panchayat polls despite terror threats


Srinagar: Despite boycott calls and terror threats by separatists, people in Jammu and Kashmir turned out in large numbers to exercise their franchise in the panchayat polls on Saturday.

Ramban district recorded a huge voter turnout of 69.4% .By noon, 35% turnout was reported from Kupwara, 42% from Bandipora and 36.5% from Baramulla. Kathua and Rajouri registered nearly 63% turnout.

Long queues were seen outside the booths in terrorist-affected areas of Balhama, Uri, Udhampur, Ganderbal, Manjakote and Panjgrain blocks.

The polls will be held in nine phases. Model code of conduct will remain in force till the election process is completed, officials said. Officials said polling will take place on 20, 24, 27, 29, December 1, 4, 8 and 11.
