Godhra train burning case: Gujarat HC commutes death to life term for 11 convicts
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court (HC) on Monday reduced to ‘life in prison’ the death sentence given to 11 convicts in the 2002 Godhra train burning case.
It also upheld life imprisonment for 20 other convicts in the case and refused to alter the acquittal order for 63 accused.
In addition, the HC directed the Gujarat government and the Railways to pay Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those killed in the Godhra train burning incident.
As per Monday’s order, all 31 convicts will now serve out their lives in prison for attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy in setting ablaze a coach of the Sabarmati Express on February 27, 2002 at Godhra station, killing all 59 occupants, most of them ‘kar sevaks’ returning from Ayodhya.
