Lightning death toll mounts to 15 in Odisha


Bhubaneswar: As many as 15 persons were killed while four others sustained injuries after being struck by lightning at different places in the state on Friday.

According to sources, lightning claimed seven persons in Balasore, four in Mayurbhanj and one each in Khurda, Kendrapara and Subarnapur districts.

Reportedly, two persons were killed after lightning struck them in Barunagadia panchayat of Basta block in Balasore district. The duo was working in their agriculture field when heavy rain accompanied by lightning lashed the area in the morning hours.

An elderly woman was also killed in Singakhunta under Soro block while a youth succumbed to the injuries after being struck by lightning in Sikharpur Mahulia village under Jaleswar block in the district.

In the meanwhile, two girl students of Churuni Padmalochan High School also sustained injuries due to lightning strike.

Similarly, one Rajendra Behera was killed while working in his farmland in Chunadiha village under Khunta police limits of Udala in Mayurbhanj district. Besides, one succumbed to his injuries in Bada Salagaon village under Baisinga block and another one died in Maheswarpur village after being struck by the atmospheric electricity.

In Khurda district, bolt claimed the life of one person while two others sustained injuries in Manikpur under Bolagarh block of the district.

According to available information one person died in lightning strike at Rajnagar’s Brahmana Sahi in Kendrapara district while two others were also killed in Subarnapur and Nuapada districts after being struck by lightning.
