Five elephants swept away in Mahanadi; rescue ops on
Cuttack: As many as five elephants were swept away in Mahanadi river near Mundali in Cuttack district while they were trying to cross the river early this morning.
The incident took place when a herd of around 20 elephants were trying crossing the river from Athagarh side to Chandaka.
Around five pachyderms got swept away in the water body, due to strong current in the river.
On being informed, Forest department officials reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. Till last reports came in, two elephants were rescued and efforts were on to save the rest.
According to Athagarh ACF Rajendra Kumar Das, three elephants are still in deep water after being swept away till Naraj Dam. Efforts are on to rescue the pachyderms as soon as the water level recedes, said Das.
Meanwhile, scores of people of the area have gathered in the spot after the news spread like wildfire.
