Farmers’ outfit calls for a 2 hr “Bharat Bandh” on June 16
Bhubaneswar: Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) on Tuesday called for a 2 hour “Bharat Bandh” on June 16 given by 51 farmers’ organizations over protest against police firing on farmers at Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh in which six farmers was killed.
In a press conference State Convenor of NKS Akshay Kumar said “the bandh will be observed in all districts across Odisha peacefully. We appeal all-farmers’ bodies, civil society groups, political parties, students’ and youths’ organizations to extend their support to the bandh and make it a success”.
Farmers’ protests started last week in Mandsaur over demand for better prices for their produce and debt relief. The protesting farmers blocked roads, vandalised property and set vehicles on fire on Tuesday. The police opened fire to control the situation.
The situation escalated when five farmers died on the spot and another farmer, who was allegedly detained by police died on Friday at a hospital.
