Deogarh: Demanding drought-hit status to Deogarh, members of district farmers’ association staged demonstration and gheraoed the district Collectorate on Wednesday.
Hundreds of farmers led by the association secretary stormed the streets by taking out rallies from Gopalji temple here today.
The agitating locals stated that drought-like situation has prevailed in Deogarh district due to lack of adequate rainfall. Alleging that the agricultural fields have dried up and developed cracks the members of the outfit demanded drought-hit status to Deogarh district, informed sources.
Among others, Deogarh MLA Subash Chandra Panigrahi also extended support to the farmers’ outfit and have assured them to take the matter to higher-ups. Panigrahi has also promised to provide necessary help to the affected farmers.
Besides, the farmers’ outfit has presented a memorandum to district Collector Sudhansu Mohan Samal and urged him to take necessary steps for declaration of drought-hit status to Deogarh within 10 days.
The farmers also threatened to intensify their stir if their demand is not fulfilled at the earliest, added sources.
