Nayagarh: Tension prevailed in Khandapada Sikharpur panchayat after a farmer was electrocuted to death while going to his agricultural land on Wednesday morning.
Hundreds of locals blocked the Nayagarh-Khandapara road by burning tyres following which vehicular movement came to a grinding halt. Vehicles were seen stranded in both sides of the road.
According to available information, Pani Bhatt a farmer came in contact with a live wire while going to his agricultural land in the morning. He died on the spot.
After the matter came to light, hundreds of locals staged a road blockade demanding Rs 10 lakh compensation to the deceased’s family.
In the meanwhile, local police reached the spot and took stock of the situation. Even after discussions with them, the locals continued their protest.
The agitators have alleged negligence of the electricity department for not taking any steps towards the issue as such wire are lying open at several places in the area.
