Farmer Commits Suicide Over Crop Loss In Sambalpur

Sambalpur: Distressed over crop loss, a farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide due to crop loss in Sambalpur district on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Birabar Das, a resident of Katarkela village under Gunduruchuan panchayat of Jamankira block in the district. He breathed his last during treatment at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Science And Research.

As per reports, a herd of elephant enter the crop fields of the village areas and destroy the crop fields regularly. This year, the elephants have destroyed the crops in about 1 acres of land of the deceased. The farmer could not bear the loss and consumed the pesticide while nobody was thee with him.

When his family members noticed his condition, they immediately rushed him to the hospital. There, the died under treatment. Family sources said, Birabar was mentally stressed following crop loss on his land.

It is worth mentioning that the villagers have reported about the elephants before the forest department personnel, but no actions have taken yet.
