Ex-bank manager arrested for embezzling pension funds

Bhubaneswar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha Crime Branch arrested a former manager of Bank of India’s Remuna Branch in Balasore district in connection with a fraud case.

The arrested have been identified as Durga Charan Panda.

According to sources, a case was registered in connection with misappropriation of government money by Pravat Kumar Das, a business correspondent, who was engaged in collecting debit cards of dead persons. Das was falsely posting money in pension accounts of the persons who were dead since long.

Panda was the manager of the branch from July 2013 to April 2017. During his tenure, Das was entrusted with the work of posting of pension rolls.

Late Parsuram Giri was a pensioner and his pension amount was credited in his account maintained at Bank of India, Remuna Branch. He died on December 27, 2014.

Similarly, late Sabitri Behera was also a pensioner and was getting the family pension after the death of her husband. She breathed her last on March 22, 2014.

However, Das had entered a false and excessive amount of pension in their accounts each month after the death of the two by entering into criminal conspiracy with the former branch manager Panda.

Till November 2018, he had falsely posted an amount to Rs 65 lakh in the account of one late Parsunam Giri and amount of Rs 67 lakh in the account of one late Sabitri Behera.

Later, the money had been withdrawn through ATM cards from the accounts of the two dead pensioners.

The two bankers had misappropriated an amount of Rs 1.32 crore by putting the excess and false amount in the pension accounts of the dead pensioners, the EOW stated in a release.

In this regard, a senior manager of the bank, Swaraj Mohanty had filed a written complaint, basing on which an enquiry was launched.

After his arrest, the accused has been forwarded to a local court in Balasore. Earlier, Das was arrested in December 2018 and is currently in judicial custody.
