Bhubaneswar: The joint eviction squad of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today evicted a major portion of land at Behera Sahi near Damayanti Apartment in Nayapalli area.
The land, recovered through this process would be used for better storage of rainwater, recharge of the dwindling water table of the city and also upkeep of the water-based ecosystem around the Nayapalli Haza and having an efficient drainage network to manage water-logging like situation during unprecedented rains.
BDA Additional Commissioner (Enforcement) Bhabani Shankar Chayani, who was leading the operation in Nayapalli, said “today around 1 acre of prime Government land was recovered during the process. On August 4 the joint enforcement team in Bhoi Sahi, Nayapalli had evicted more than 600 decimal Government land. The land recovered during these actions will help in better management of rainwater, maintaining a sound water table and a better environment as the original Nayapalli Haza in the area has already been on a path of extinction.”
The eviction process started at around 10.30 am and continued till 3 pm in presence of Nayappali police. Four squads of BDA, one from BMC, two JCBs and two chain-mounted proclain machines were deployed during the eviction work.
One platoon of gents APR and one section of lady police force were deployed at the site. Nayapalli inspector-in-charge Umakanta Pradhan was present during the drive along with enforcement officials from BDA. More than 50 houses were demolished during the drive.
It can be mentioned here that the civic and development authorities have started taking immediate measures near Nayapalli after the flooding near ISKCON Temple and subsequent follow-up including plan for a new drainage network and revival of the old water body Nayapalli Haza, so that stormwater would no longer trouble local residents and channelize through the nearby drainage channel no. 10. The Drainage Division (BMC) has also started work towards surveying and widening of the course of the channel so that the water would not be blocked.
