Cuttack: Eminent socialist leader and only Loksabha speaker from Odisha, Rabi Ray passed away today afternoon. He was ailing since a long time and was shifted to Central ICU at the city based SCB Medical since February 12. He was 91.
Born in November 26, 1926 in Nimapada, Puri, he completed his schoolingin his village Bhuanragada and then graduated from Ravenshaw College and Madhusudan Law College in Cuttack. He was a student president in both prestigious institutions.
Later he won with huge margin as a member of Socialist Party from Puri Loksabha constituency in 1967. A prominent Janata Dal and Samata Party leader, Ray is remembered for his able supervision in proceedings of the House as the Speaker of the ninth Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condoled the death of the veteran socialist leader. Governor SC Jamir also expressed grief over his death.
Ray was also a former Union Health minister in Morarji Desai cabinet and was MP from Puri and Kendrapara. He also represented Rajya Sabha once.
