Elephant menace in Gopalpur

Keonjhar: The sight of an elephant herd has sent shivers in the heart of villagers at Gopalpur under Sadar forest division of Keonjhar district as 17 elephants were sighted nearly 10 kilometres away from their residential area on Tuesday.
The villagers have started efforts to prevent the elephants to venture into their fields and destroy the crops, which is adjacent to the forest. While the forest department officials with the help of villagers tried to scare away the elephants but to no avail.
It has been reported that acres of crops have been destroyed due to the menace of the herd. The villagers have demanded that the forest department should provide adequate compensation for their crops and scare away the elephants as soon as possible.
According to sources, the herd contains of four-to five tuskers and remaining are female elephants. They had arrived in the area on Monday night and did not leave since then.
