Bargarh: A 65-year-old woman died allegedly after going without food for two days at Khuntapalli village under Sadar block in Bargarh district on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Kunduru Nag, wife of Jadu Nag. Although she was a beneficiary under the public distribution system (PDS), she was denied rice. She did not get food for her survival for two days and died, some locals alleged.
The block officials allocated financial assistance of Rs 2,000 to the deceased’s husband for her last rites under the Harishchandra Yojana. Subsequently, Revenue inspector Florina Pardia and panchayat executive officer Dileshwar Bhoi visited the deceased’s house and inquired into the matter.
According to sources, the elderly couple was living in an Indira Awas Yojana house near the old panchayat office building in the village. The couple was suffering from old age related ailments and was unable to move out to earn a living.
Most of the time, they were surviving on alms offered by their neighbours while they had to go without food sometimes.
