Ganjam: A dreaded criminal was critically injured in a police firing near Ramapada forests under Buguda police limits in Ganjam district early on Tuesday morning.
The accused, Benu Barik of Odagaon village, with bullet injuries on his left leg was admitted to Buguda Community Health Centre under police custody. He was wanted for more than 10 cases pending against him in Nayagarh and Ganjam districts.
Acting on a tip-off about his movement in the locality, Buguda police intercepted him near Ramapada forests at around 7 am. But Benu opened fire at the cops.
The police team fired in retaliation, in which Benu sustained injuries in his left leg and fell down. The cops immediately overpowered him.
A bike, a mobile phone, and a pistol were seized from his possession. However, Benu’s associate Tulu Das managed to flee the spot and efforts are on to nab him, police said.
