Ganjam: Chhatrapur sub-divisional judicial magistrate Jay Prakash Nayak on Thursday convicted seven persons in a dowry harassment case and sentenced them to one year jail.
The convicts were identified as P Mohan Reddy, P Jagannath Reddy, P Gunnama, G Revati, P Bijaylaxmi Reddy, P Bhagyabati and P Kamamma, all residents of Chamakhandi village.
According to sources, the convicts had been physically and mentally torturing complainant Lalita Reddy demanding more dowry since her marriage with Chattal Chandra Rao Reddy on February 23, 2016.
According to sources, Lalita had been living in the house of her husband’s maternal uncle since their marriage. However, they were torturing her for more dowry.
On August 19, 2016, Lalita had lodged a complaint with Chamakhandi police in this regard. Based on the complaint, the police had arrested Lalita’s husband and other relatives.
The court pronounced the verdict after verifying the case records and statements of the witnesses. However, the court acquitted the victim’s husband due to lack of evidence against him.
