Dilbagh Singh gets additional charge of J&K DGP
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid was removed from his post late on Thursday and Director General of Police (prison) Dilbagh Singh has been given additional charge.
As per the order issued by the Principal Secretary (Home), Vaid, a 1986-batch IPS officer, was transferred and posted as the Transport Commissioner. Singh will hold the additional charge till a regular arrangement is made.
The decision was made after serious differences had cropped up between Mr Vaid and Governor’s administration after the officer was divested of powers to make certain administrative decisions and authority was given to ADG Law and Order Munir Khan. Vaid lodged a strong protest with state government and Union Home Secretary.
Notably, three policemen and eight relatives of policemen were kidnapped by terrorists in south Kashmir. They were set free hours after the police quietly released around a dozen family members of terrorists, including the father of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riaz Naikoo.
Sources in the Home Ministry said that the release of terrorists is believed to have hugely affected the morale of the rank and file of the Jammu and Kashmir police. It was also said that the top officers of the department misjudged the impact of the decision.
