Debt ridden RDA plans to spend Rs 2.5 crore on Smart City

Rourkela: The Rourkela Development Authority (RDA) has decided to spend Rs 2.5 crores on developing Smart City infrastructure. However, RDA employees have not taken it well with the body being debt ridden since long.

RDA was debt ridden and had taken a loan of Rs 6 crores from HUDCO which had grown to Rs 18 crores with interest in 2003. HUDCO had filed a case in Orissa High Court and RDA bank account was sealed following which employees had not received their salary for months together.

The situation improved only after then additional district collector Kartikeya Pandyan directed for letting out RDA kiosks in various markets of the city. The rent collected helped RDA improve while later Shalini Pandit and Krishan Kumar also further improved the situation as additional collectors.

RDA has earned Rs 6 crores in the last 10 years and most of the rent it gets is used in paying employee salaries and electricity bills.  Now that it has decided to spend Rs 2.5 crores on Smart City infrastructure, the employees have started protesting.
