Death toll rises to 290 in serial bomb blasts in Sri Lanka, 24 nabbed

Colombo: The death toll in the serial bomb blasts in the island nation has gone up to 290 on Monday. Authorities said they have nabbed 24 persons in this connection.

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera  said nearly 500 people were injured in the serial bomb blasts that rocked Sri Lanka on Sunday.

The spokesperson said the Sunday night toll was at 207.This was revised as more bodies were recovered and some more succumbed to their injuries.

Police have seized a van and its driver who was suspected of transporting the suspects into Colombo.

No group has claimed responsibility for the heinous attack on Sunday.

Sources said the suspects were from the minority Muslim community and the arrested person is a Muslim. He is the driver of the van.

Sri Lanka Air Force said it has recovered an improvised explosives device along a road leading to the departure terminal at the Colombo international airport on Sunday night after the blasts occurred.
