Ganjam: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed Odisha Chief Secretary to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation to the family of a woman, who had died during a police raid on a shop.
The direction of the commission came in response to a petition filed by Advocate Prabir Kumar Das. The Chief Secretary has been asked to compensate victim Laxmi Bisoyi’s family within six weeks.
Reportedly, police had raided the shop of Narayan Bisoyi on suspicion of narcotics sale at Jagannath Prasad area of Ganjam district in 2014. During the raid, a policeman had allegedly pushed Narayan’s mother Laxmi leading to her death.
In this regard, a case was filed with the NHRC. Acting on the petition, the rights commission had issued a notice to the state government asking it to show cause as to why compensation should not be paid to the victim’s family.
