Cyclone Vardah strikes near Chennai: Two dead
Chennai: The very severe cyclonic storm Vardah on Monday made landfall in Chennai around 2:55 pm at Pulicat. It has hit land with wind speeds of between 120 and 130 kmph.
Two people have died as cyclone Vardah hit Tamil Nadu and caused heavy damage as rains and strong winds lashed the city. The cyclonic storm will take about four hours to cross land completely, said sources from meteorological department.
The Army, Navy and Air Force are on standby. More than 16,000 people have been evacuated. Flight operations also have been suspended. 8,008 people accommodated in 95 relief camps are ready said National Disater Management Authority.
Earlier, almost 50 flights were delayed from Chennai on Monday morning. All schools are closed today in Chennai.
