Cyclone Gaja leaves 11 dead in Tamil Nadu


Salem (TN): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami said the cyclone has claimed 11 lives. The severe cyclonic storm ‘Gaja‘, that crossed the coast between Nagapattinam and nearby Vedaranyam, lashed littoral regions of the state and damaged communication and power infrastructure.

Talking to media persons at Salem, Palaniswami said relief work is already underway. The Chief Minister said the families of the deceased will be provided with Rs 10 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund (CMPRF). Those with severe injuries will be provided with Rs one lakh each while people who had sustained simple injuries will get Rs 25,000, he added. The damage caused by Gaja to the fishing sector is being assessed, he said.

A large number of trees and electricity poles have been uprooted due to gusty winds in Nagapattinam and Karaikal districts. Cuddalore and Puthukottai are severely affected due to cyclone.
