Bhubaneswar: Director General of Police (DGP) RP Sharma on Sunday ordered a Crime Branch probe into the alleged attack on former MP and Utkal Bharat President Kharabela Swain in Rayagada.
“The Crime Branch will find out the motive behind the attack and persons involved,” Sharma said while speaking to media today.
Sharma said the investigating team will also inquire into the previous assaults on Swain at Aul in Kendrapara and Khaira in Balasore district.
Meanwhile, Swain met the additional SP of Rayagada, Patitapabana Choudhury today morning and lodged a complaint in this regard.
“A youth, identified as Sumanta Nayak, has been detained in connection with the incident. He is being interrogated at the Kashipur police station. Further investigation is on and stringent action will be taken against the guilty,” Choudhury said.
Notably, Swain was allegedly assaulted by a youth while he was addressing a meeting in Kashipur on Saturday.
The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) strongly condemned the attack and said there is no place for violence in a democratic system. “However, it is wrong on the part of Kharabela Swain to pull each issue into a blame game against BJD,” the ruling party said.
