Cops solve Suryakanti Meher murder case; sister-in-law, contract killer held
Kalahandi: The Crime Branch (CB) of Odisha Police on Monday claimed to have solved the sensational murder case of Suryakanti Meher, a woman from Kalahandi, by arresting a contract killer and her sister-in-law in connection with the case.
The incident occurred at Pragati Nagar in Matigaon village under Junagarh police limits in Kalahandi district on February 19 this year.
The accused were identified as Chandrakanti Meher, the deceased’s sister-in-law and a contract killer Tankadhara Pandey.
An investigation was initiated after the deceased’s husband Sumeswar Meher lodged a complaint with Junagarh police in this regard. After the police was unable to get any lead for six months after the murder, the case was finally handed over to the CB for investigation
A team led by DSP Himansu Sekhar Mishra launched a probe and during investigation it was ascertained that Chandrakanti Meher had plotted to eliminate Suryakanti for which she has hired a contract killer.
According to police, Suryakanti was alone at home when Chandrakantri assisted the contract killer entered her house and attacked her with sharp object on her head, face and neck, killing her on the spot.
Based on the lead, the CB arrested the deceased woman’s sister-in-law and the contract killer on October 15. They were produced before the Dharmagrah SDJM court on the same day. The police has appealed for a remand of the duo for further investigation into the case.
