Contractor shot dead in Ganjam; past enmity suspected

Berhampur: Three unidentified miscreants gunned down a contractor at Gothagan village under Sheragada police limits in Ganjam district late on Sunday night.

The deceased has been identified as Jogendra Swain, a local contractor.

According to sources, three bike-borne miscreants arrived at Swain’s house and called him to come out. When Swain came out, the trio opened fire at him and sped away.

Swain was initially rushed to Hinjili Community Health Centre and later to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. However doctors referred him to a hospital in Vishakhapatnam. Swain succumbed to his injury while being shifted to Vishakhapatnam.

It is suspected that the attack is the fall out of a past enmity. The deceased’s family members have alleged that former sarpanch of Gothagan, Sibaram Sethi has enmity with Swain.

The post-mortem of the body was conducted today morning.

On being asked, Sheragada inspector-in-charge Biswaranjan Nayak said: “On the basis of a complaint filed by the deceased’s kin Bipin Swain, a case has been registered while efforts are on to nab the accused persons.”
