Conman arrested for extorting money from cousins
Bhubaneswar: Nayapalli police on Sunday arrested a 44-year-old man for allegedly keeping a jobless youth and his cousin in confinement and extorting Rs 71,000 from them on fake promises of providing a job.
The accused, Akhaya Kumar Jena, is a resident of Ramakrishnapur in Bhuban police limits of Dhenkanal district. He lives in IRC Village in the city. The police seized Rs 70,500 from his possession.
According to sources, Jena was arrested following the complaint of Raja Mohanand (23) of Dhiringipada in Town police limits of Phulbani in Kandhamal district.
The accused had confined Raja and his cousin Raju Choudhury in his IRC Village room and extorted the money.
According to sources, Raju, who works in a hotel in Phulbani Town, befriended with the accused during the latter’s stay at the hotel. Raju had asked the accused to arrange a job for his cousin Raja, who is currently pursuing Plus II.
A few days back, the accused contacted Raja and asked him to come to Bhubaneswar with a cash of Rs 1,00000 to grab a job. An unsuspecting Raja and his cousin reached Bhubaneswar on Saturday. Later, the accused took the duo to his room and took away Rs 70,000 from Raja and confined the duo in a room.
The accused snatched away their cellphones. Later, he returned to the room and handed over the cellphones to the duo and asked them to contact their family members to bring 30,000 immediately or else he would kill them.
The accused also snatched away Rs 1,000 from the pocket of the complainant. The complainant managed to call the control room and narrated the whole incident. Acting swiftly, a PCR van reached there and rescued both the brothers and arrested the accused.
