Nirakarpur: A group of armed miscreants looted cigarettes worth Rs 3 crore after intercepting a container on National Highway 16 near Rameswar Square under Nirakarpur Police limits in Khurda district here.
The incident took place on Friday night. The police began a probe following the complaint of the driver.
According to sources, the container belonging to Rivigo sales private limits of Delhi with various products worth Rs 5.29 crore of ITC Company, Kolkata was heading to Vijayawada from Kolkata. A driver from Kolkata drove the container to Balasore from where Sushant Pradhan (42) of Bhadrak started driving it to Vijayawada.
The GPS installed container crossed Gotipada tollgate at 8 pm. A 10-wheeler truck intercepted the container at Rameswar Square. Soon after the truck stopped, six armed miscreants got down from it and took the driver to a nearby forest. They tied the driver and assaulted him before fleeing with Rs 2,500.
Later, they loaded 400 packets of cigarette worth Rs 3 crore in the truck from the container and vanished. The container driver reached Jankia police at 2 pm and narrated the incident.
Balugaon SDPO Subash Chandra Panda, Nirakarpur IIC SK Upadhyay and other officials visited the spot and found the container.
The dacoits were communicating in Hindi and Telugu, the driver said.
