Child marriage bid foiled in Koraput
Koraput: A bid to marry-off a minor girl has been foiled by the Koraput district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Kundura police at Bamunigaon under Jeypore PS limits on Sunday.
According to reports, the marriage of a girl was fixed with a youth of Limkiaguda village under Kundura police limits a few days ago, without her knowledge.
However, the girl refused to marry the youth, following which the father of the girl panicked and decided to marry her younger daughter, who is a class X student, with the same youth.
She was also kept at Jeynagar in Jeypore town on Saturday as the wedding date was fixed yesterday.
Meanwhile, the minor girl dialled to the toll-free number of the district child protection unit (DCPU) and narrated her ordeal.
Following orders of DCPU president Gayatri Devi and DCPO Rajashri Das, a team rushed to the village and rescued the minor girl before marriage.
The minor girl said that she is interested in more studies and would not marry at an early age.
