Amethi: A close aide of BJP leader Smriti Irani was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Surendra Singh, former head of Baraulia village.
According to sources, Surendra after returning home from a function was fast asleep outside his home last night when some bike-borne miscreants opened fire on him and fled the spot.
On being informed about the incident, police rushed to the spot and launched a probe into the matter. Reportedly, police have detained two persons in connection with the murder.
Surendra was part of the BJP team that worked on the ground in Amethi ahead of the elections. Irani reportedly identified him as a key party worker.
While the motive behind the murder is unclear at the moment, police suspect it to be fall out of past enmity.
