Bird flu: 500 chickens culled in Paradip


Paradip: In a war-footing, culling of chickens continued for the second consecutive day on Monday here after avian influenza virus H5N1 was detected in some birds.

Samples collected from different poultry farms in Shandhakuda and Badapadia here were tested positive for H5N1 virus. As many as 500 chickens and ducks collected from Badapadia and Shandhakuda markets have been killed. This apart, hundreds of eggs have been dumped.

Around 2000 infected chickens will be killed in first phase, said an official here today.

The district administration has also appealed the public not to consume chicken and eggs within 1-km radius of the area where the virus has been detected. It has also banned supply of chickens and eggs to Paradip for next three months.
