Bhadrak Unrest: Fresh violence erupts; shops torched, Collector replaced, admin imposes curfew

Bhadrak: Despite clamping of prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC, the communally sensitive Bhadrak town again gets gripped by fresh violence following the failure of peace committee meeting held this afternoon.

Amid the chaotic scenario, state government has replaced the district collector by appointing Gyana Das as the new Collector of Bhadrak. Gyana Das, who was the commissioner of Cuttack Municipal Corporation, has taken the charge from today following the direction of the Government.

This evening the district administration has imposed curfew to check the outbreak of violence and to bring back the law and order situation under sovereignty. After road blocks and arson reported at many places, administration has imposed section 144 CrPC in Dhamnagar as well.

Reportedly, groups of angry mob were seen to be scuffling with Police men near Nua Bazar Chhak and blocked roads demanding the arrest of ‘wrongdoers’. The irate mob ransacked and torched shops at some places of the district headquarters.

As per reports, Home Secretary Asit Tripathy, DGP KB Singh, ADG (Law and Order) and RDC (Central) have hurried to Bhadrak and 15 platoons of police force have been deployed.

Notably, the unrest in Bhadrak town was created by Bajrang Dal and VHP activists yesterday following derogatory remarks on Lord Ram and Goddess Sita on Facebook.

The Bhagat Sena Ram Navami Samiti had lodged a complaint with police demanding arrest of Asif Khan, Asif Ali and M Jahan for their alleged involvement in posting such objectionable remarks on social media.
