Cuttack: The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) destroyed over 60 kg of food from street vendors and stalls put up in Bali Yatra following a food inspection raid at the fair on Friday.
The raids on the food stalls and vendors were conducted on the directions of Cuttack Collector, Municipal Commissioner, Health Officer, and Food Safety commissioner, officials.
Sources said the move came after a few visitors complained of stomach illnesses after taking food from the street vendors at Bali Yatra.
While the annual fair is a destination of mouth-watering food, the authorities had advised the vendors to maintain hygiene.
Food Safety officer PK Pradhan, informed the media that, awareness drives are being conducted for the food vendors to provide safe food and drinking water at the stalls. He also added regular quality checks at the stalls. The raids will continue till the 10-day fair comes to an end, he said.
“If we find any vendor violating the rules more than once, then the food will be seized and necessary action will be taken against the vendor as per the Food Safety Standards Act,” Pradhan added.
While the move is for the safety of scores of visitors, the officials also encouraged the locals and the traders to make the fair plastic-free.
