Baijayant Panda resigns as Lok Sabha member

Bhubaneswar: After quitting the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) last month, Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda on Tuesday tendered his resignation as the Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha.

Panda has sent a letter about his resignation to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, he informed in a tweet

“In letter to Naveen Patnaik on my intent to dissociate from BJD, I’d said on completion of my father’s kriyas I’d resign from LS. The day after they ended, I sought to meet Hon’ Speaker as per custom. It wasn’t possible & i understand she’s since gone abroad, so I’ve had it delivered,” Panda wrote in his Twitter handle.

While quitting the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on May 28, Panda in a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had said that he would convey his decision to quit the membership of Lok Sabha to Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

“With the BJD and you (Patnaik) yourself having made it abundantly clear that I am unwanted, it is only right for me to dissociate from it. Separately, I will be conveying my decision formally to the Honourable Speaker of the Lok Sabha to accept my resignation from that August institution upon completion of my religious obligations of bereavement,” Panda had written in his three-page-long resignation letter to the BJD president.

Panda further stated that he was “hurt and unhappy” over the fact that members of the ruling party did not attend the funeral of his industrialist father Bansidhar Panda.

It is worth mentioning here that Panda was suspended from the primary membership of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) by party supremo Naveen Patnaik in January for allegedly indulging in anti-party activities.
