Asian Para Games: Odisha’s Jayanti Behera clinches bronze in 200 mt sprint
Jakarta: Para athlete from Odisha, Jayanti Behera clinched the bronze medal in the 200-metre sprint event in Asian Para Games 2018, held in Jakarta in Indonesia. Jayanti bagged the spot by clocking a timing of 27.45 seconds.
Li Lu of China won the gold with 25.82 seconds, while China’s Wang Yanping grabbed the silver with 26.45 seconds.
The sprint was conducted in the T45/46/47 category that is a disability sports classification for Para athletics that includes people with double above or below the elbow amputations, or a similar disability.
Born in Puri’s Sakhigopal in 1999, Behera is a Track and Field Athlete who represents India in the women’s 200m, 400m, and 800m event. She is World youth champion in the TR 400m event and has also won the gold medal at the recent National Para Athletics Championships 2018 in Panchkula 2018.
Behera won a silver medal in 100-metre race at the Asian Youth Para Games-2017 in Dubai. In the same year, she had clinched gold for India in 400-metre event at the World Junior Para Athletic Championships held in Switzerland in August. She had also won a gold medal at the China Open Para Athletic Grand Prix Championship in May 2018.
