Asia Cup 2018: Afghanistan wins by 91 runs, Sri Lanka out of tournament
Abu Dhabi: Afghanistan won against Sri Lanka by 91 runs in the Group B match in the Asia Cup 2018 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here on Tuesday. Following this, the former champions, Sri Lanka has been knocked out of the Asia Cup.
Sri Lanka needed to win the group B to stay in the tournament. Electing to bat after winning the toss, Afghanistan built the pressure by putting on 249 runs on board before bowling out out the Sri Lankans for a mere 158 in 41.2 overs.
Because of the brilliant performances from Afghanistan spinners, the team registered a comfortable 91-run win against Sri Lanka, sending the five-time champions out of the competition. The spin trio of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman shared six wickets between them with two wickets each, as they destroyed the Sri Lankan batting order in the chase.
With this win, Afghanistan will join Bangladesh from Group B in the Super Fours. For Afghanistan, this was their first win over the Sri Lankans in One-day Internationals.
India will play its first match of the tournament against Hong Kong in match number 4 at Dubai on September 18.
