Balasore: The Government Railway Police (GRP) last night seized at least 45 tortoises from a train at Rupsa railway junction in Balasore and arrested three persons in this connection.
The accused trio has been identified as Uttam Mandal (19), Ashok Paria (27), and Anadi Samal (24).
According to sources, the GRP officials apprehended the trio during routine checking in the Howrah Puri Passenger train. Following the search, officials seized 45 tortoises from them.
The accused persons were smuggling the reptile species from Puri’s Sakhigopal to Kolkata, the police said.
Reportedly, the rescued tortoises have been handed over to Chandipur Forest department.
While a case has been registered against the accused persons, the trio will soon be forwarded to court, sources said.
