2 killed as avalanche hits Ramban district in Jammu and Kashmir

Ramban (Jammu and Kashmir): Two people were killed as an avalanche hit them at Kawana Trigam village in Ramban district on Tuesday, media reports said.

They were on their way to home when the tragic incident occurred.

Deputy Commissioner (DC), Showkat Aijaz said “Two persons died on Tuesday after a snow avalanche hit near village Trigam in the afternoon.” A compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the deceased has been announced.

Reports said some more persons were missing. Rescuers are trying to locate them. The area has been witnessing heavy snowfall for the past several days.

Vehicular movement has been paralyzed due to heavy snow accumulation at different stretches of the highway.

The Jammu-Srinagar highway has been closed for commuters in the wake of inclement weather conditions. Schools up to middle standard in Reasi district will remain closed for the day as helicopter and ropeway services at Vaishno Devi shrine have also been suspended.
