Surat: As many as 19 people were killed while several others were injured in a fire that broke out at a coaching centre in Sarthana area of Surat in Gujarat on Friday.
According to sources, the students were attending tuition classes when the fire broke out at the top two floors of the commercial building called Takshashila Arcade in the Sarthana area of Surat at around 3.30 pm.
On receiving information about the incident, fire tenders were pressed into the service to douse the flames. Till then, few students had already jumped off the building to escape.
About 50 or 60 people were inside when the fire broke out, covering the area in huge plumes of smoke, sources added.
Nineteen fire tenders and two hydraulic platforms were pressed into service to douse the fire and rescue those stuck inside the building, said an official. Subsequently, the fire was doused within an hour.
Reportedly, Surat police has filed an FIR against three people including builders of the complex- Harshal Vekaria and Jignesh, and the owner of the coaching centre Bhargav Bhutani.
